Rotary upgrade

The granpa that sold me the boat said that a while back he did an upgrade from drum to rotary, whatever that means and now the boat feels better. I didn't want to sound stupid in front of him, so I said great and figured it's a good thing. So, what does it mean and is it really a good thing?

So, my uncle recently took the plunge and swapped out his boat's old drum steering for a fancy rotary system, and wow, what a difference. Steering is now way smoother and so much easier to handle. Seriously, rotary steering really amps up the cable movement, giving you way better control over the boat. It's definitely one of those upgrades that just makes everything feel more enjoyable. If you're on a boat that glides along effortlessly, that's probably why! Honestly, it feels so much better out on the water now, what a game changer

Calling a switch from drum to rotary an "upgrade" is like saying cassette tapes are better than MP3s, nostalgic maybe, but not always practical. Some old-timers romanticize rotary engines or controls, but they're often fussier, harder to service, and not as efficient as modern alternatives....sentimental doesn't always mean smarter

@castingcouchcaptain22 I'm with you regarding all that you're saying since I switched mine to rotary last year. It handles perfectly now, like way tighter, especially at low speeds. Buuuut, @MonaT I get your point. Yet... drum systems on older boats can be sloppy. Rotary might not be perfect, but it's helping avoid that mess.
