Hey everyone, need help with my 2005 Starcraft Bowrider 190

Just joined the forum because I’ve been stuck on a problem with my Bowrider and figured someone here might have dealt with it.

Last weekend, I took the boat out for the first time this season—got it winterized last fall, so I thought it’d be smooth. But when I turned on the stereo to play music for the kids, it just cut out after 5 minutes. Now it won’t turn on at all, even if I reset the fuse (checked the one by the stereo and the main panel, both are good).

I tried a few simple things: disconnected the stereo’s power wire and reconnected it, made sure the ground wire wasn’t loose (it’s bolted to the frame like it should be), and even tested the battery with a meter—reads 12.6V, so it’s not dead. The rest of the electronics work fine—GPS, lights, bilge pump—so it’s just the stereo.

Is this a common issue with these older Starcraft stereos? Mine’s the original Kenwood one that came with the boat. Should I just replace the stereo, or is there a trick to fix it? Also, if anyone has a recommendation for a replacement that fits the dash opening (don’t wanna cut anything!) and works well on boats, that’d be awesome.

Hey @emeriezaiya, welcome to the forum! Sounds like your Kenwood just gave up after a long life. Well, these older boat stereos do tend to die off, especially after sitting through winter. Since your other electronics are fine and the fuses check out, maybe you can replace it rather than trying to fix the old one.

For replacements, look for a marine-rated stereo that fits a single DIN or double DIN opening like your Kenwood. Companies like Jensen, Fusion, and Clarion make units that are plug-and-play for Starcraft Bowriders. A marine unit will handle moisture and vibration better, plus you won’t have to cut anything in the dash. Are you hoping to stick with something basic, or want Bluetooth, aux, and maybe a little waterproofing too?
